CLEAN Gardening and the Trail of the SNAIL,

Between neatly trimmed hedges and “low-maintenance” rock gardens, a longing for purity thrives - odorless and, above all, controllable. In her new installation work Clean Gardening and the Trail of the Snail, Gabriela Kobus opens up fields of slime, aesthetics, and order.

Based on observations of microorganisms in the wild vegetation behind her studio, the artist examines traces of slugs, linking them to ideas explored in earlier works. These include concepts of aesthetic design in private and public spaces in relation to feelings of safety and the avoidance of discomforts such as disgust or fear. Kobus places this topic in an extended context that also includes non-human actors.

A floor-level installation traces the notations of biological movement: slime trails left by leopard slugs, which is a site-bound slug that moves through the undergrowth as a nocturnal gardener, indifferent to human systems of plant order. In the main gallery, the artist highlights the aesthetics of cleanliness, arranging gravel surfaces punctuated by glass objects of precise and cutting elegance - beautiful and cold at once.
